One of the highlights of an undistinguished but long ‘career’ in cricket. A Cornwall sweater presented by Mike Gatting after representing the County at Over 50 level.
My first organised games of cricket were in 1964 at the age of 9 at Treliske School in Truro and then at Truro School and ended for Cornwall Over 60s v Sussex in 2019 55 years later. In between that I played an estimated 1,000 games with records of 850 of them carefully jotted down in an old exercise book after each game. I was primarily a slow off break bowler with the emphasis on slow rather than break but did have my moments with the bat when called upon.
A large proportion of my club cricket was played for Braywood CC with 312 appearances for the Berkshire village club whilst in exile from Cornwall for 10 years. In Cornwall I played mainly for with Perranporth CC 103 times, Redruth CC 94 times and Stithians CC 84 times with one season at Botallack CC.
I represented many other clubs and teams on tour (37 tours) including touring India with Wansdworth Occasionals C.C. in and Australia and New Zealand with Washington C.C. and Hoot Toots CC in the Isles of Scilly plus many home club tours. I made 84 appearances for the 7 Cs – C.C.C.C.C.C.C. (Cornwall County Council Clerk and Chief Executives Cricket Club). I intend to have a section about each of the clubs and hope former friends and team mates can add their memories of those clubs.
